Kyle Follmer - Varsity Head Coach
Kyle Follmer was appointed as the head coach of Gentry Boys Hockey in fall 2023, bringing with him an extensive background in hockey as both a player and coach. A Minnesota native who played high school hockey at St. Paul Como Park, Follmer's hockey journey spans multiple levels in North American hockey. After his high school career, Follmer developed his skills in junior hockey, playing in both the USHL with the Sioux City Musketeers and Lincoln Stars, and the NAHL with the North Iowa Outlaws. He went on to play four seasons of Division I college hockey at Northern Michigan University (2009-2013). Following his collegiate career, Follmer spent five successful seasons in professional hockey, primarily in the ECHL. He played for several teams including the Allen Americans, Quad City Mallards, and Fort Wayne Komets, before transitioning to coaching. His coaching career began in the junior ranks, where he served as an assistant coach for the New Mexico Ice Wolves for two seasons.
At Gentry, Follmer combines his teaching role in physical education with his duties as head coach, embodying the school's commitment to both academic and athletic excellence. His coaching philosophy emphasizes player development both on and off the ice, recognizing the importance of balancing competitive hockey with strong academics. "I am very excited to join Gentry and bring my experience as a player and coach to this growing program," says Follmer. "We have so many guys who love the game and want to play it at the highest level, all while getting a top-notch education." His vision for the program includes making Gentry one of the best teams in the state while providing players with opportunities to advance their skills and education simultaneously.
Follmer's extensive playing experience and passion for developing student-athletes make him well-suited to navigate the evolving landscape of high school hockey. Under his leadership, Gentry Boys Hockey aims to become a premier destination for players seeking to combine competitive hockey with academic excellence.
Tommy Doyle - Varsity Assistant Coach
Coach Doyle most recently worked as an assistant coach during the 2022–23 season for the Augsburg University Men’s Hockey team, where they won the MIAC Playoff Championship and a berth to the NCAA Division III national tournament. Prior to that, Coach Doyle coached at the Blake School for six seasons as a varsity assistant, helping them to their first AA State Tournament trip in 2020. Before Blake, he coached one season with the Farmington boys’ varsity team, making the AA State Tournament in 2016 for the first time in the school’s history. From 2010–15, Doyle was the first head coach for the re-vamped St. Paul Highland Park boy’s program since they started to co-op in 1987. From 2008–10, he coached with the Minneapolis East boy’s program.
Coach Doyle played college hockey at Augsburg College from 2003–07, receiving a BA in Physical Education. He played high-school hockey along with football and baseball at St. Paul Como Park. Coach Doyle has taught in the Saint Paul Public School district for the past 15 years, and is in his first year at L’Etoile du Nord French Immersion School in St. Paul.
Justin Hanna - Varsity Assistant Coach
Coach Hanna grew up in Little Canada, MN where he attended and played hockey at Roseville Area High School from 2001-03 and was a member of the 2002 and 2003 state tournament teams. Coach Hanna then went on to play 4 years (2005-09) and graduate from Hamline University in St. Paul. When at Hamline, Coach Hanna was part of two NCAA tournament teams. After college he coached 4 years in Roseville Area Youth Hockey program as a head and assistant coach at various levels. He then went on to coach 4 years of JV and Varsity (2014-2018) in the Duluth Marshall High school program in Duluth, MN.
Josh Kozak - Junior Varsity Head Coach
Kozak is an experienced, dedicated, and successful hockey coach with a strong foundation in Minnesota's youth hockey and a track record of inspiring young athletes to play at the next level. Kozak’s hockey journey began in the Armstrong Youth Hockey Association, where he played through his youth and high school years before advancing to junior hockey. He transitioned to coaching as his own children began to skate, bringing passion and expertise to every team he’s led since 2009.
For over a decade, Kozak has coached girls’ hockey teams from 8U to 19U, guiding players through various levels of development and competition. In his ongoing position with Hometown Hockey, Kozak has trained elite teams and run several skating clinics and his coaching has led many athletes to pursue collegiate careers. As the Varsity Head Coach for the Northern Tier Stars girls' team, Kozak demonstrated resilience and leadership. He took over during a challenging season, stabilizing and inspiring his players to improve remarkably. Under his guidance, the team achieved its best record in program history in 2023-24. Kozak’s accomplishments include being honored as Section 7AA Coach of the Year—the first in Northern Tier Stars history.
With a coaching style rooted in player-centered development, tactical expertise, and team-building, Kozak is a highly respected figure in Minnesota hockey, consistently raising the bar for his athletes and programs alike.
